How to Remove a Kingpin From a Skateboard Truck

The kingpin is an essential part of a skateboard truck. Basically, the kingpin is a bolt that connects the base, bushings and axle of a truck and holds them together. Sometimes a kingpin will break after wear and tear, and sometimes a skateboarder will simply want to install a new kingpin. No matter what the reason, most people can successfully remove a kingpin from their skateboard truck.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the four screws and four small bolts using a Phillips-head screwdriver from the truck with the kingpin that needs to be removed. Place these screws and bolts in a safe place until you are done.

    • 2

Remove the large bolt at the top of the kingpin using either a 14 mm wrench or a skate key. Place this large bolt along with the other small bolts and screws.

    • 3

Remove the washer and bushing from the skateboard truck with your hands. Set these parts aside with the other parts from the truck.

    • 4

Hold the truck's base plate with your non-dominant hand and tap the top of the kingpin with the hammer using your dominant hand. If the kingpin isn't broken, it should be relatively easy to remove. If the kingpin is broken, it might be slightly more difficult.

Set the base plate over the space between two bricks or concrete blocks if the kingpin is stuck. Tap the top of the kingpin with your hammer once again.
