Instructions to Make a Quarter Pipe

A quarter pipe is basically one half of a half pipe ramp. Quarter pipes can be made out of concrete, metal or wood. Skateboarders ride up the quarter pipe and use it to perform aerial tricks. This is referred to as vertical skateboarding. If you do not have a skate park in your local area you may not have a quarter pipe that you can use to practice your vertical skate tricks on. You can build your own at home and use it in your driveway or back yard.

Instructions

    • 1

Design a quarter pipe plan. When you make your plan you can decide how high you want to make the ramp and what type of material you use to build the ramp. The cheapest material to use for your quarter pipe would be plywood. Draw your plan on graph paper and include your measurements.

    • 2

Look at your plan and draw the shape of the side pieces of the quarter pipe on a piece of plywood. The shape of the side pieces should be that of a 90-degree triangle. Draw the shape on a 3/4-inch piece of plywood.

    • 3

Take a circular saw and cut along the outline of the triangle shape. Repeat this on a second piece of plywood to make the second side piece.

    • 4

Attach the side pieces to the ends of ten 2-by-4s. Get 2-by-4s that match the width of the quarter pipe you decided on in your plan. The 2-by-4s will be the support structure for your ramp. You can use additional 2-by-4s if you want; the more you use the more stable and secure the ramp will be. Use a drill and wood screws to secure the side pieces to the 2-by-4s.

    • 5

Use 2-by-4 and 2-by-6 plywood boards to build a box shape. Connect four 2-by-4s together in a rectangle shape using a drill and wood screws. Place the boards down flat on top of the 2-by-4 frame and secure it to the frame with screws. This will be the platform you stand on when your ramp is completed.

    • 6

Attach the box shape platform to two wood posts. You can use 2-by-4s or 4-by-4s to make your posts. Place one post on the left side and the other on the right side of the box shape. Use a drill and wood screws. Attach the posts to the top of the ramp frame with screws.

    • 7

Make the ramp portion of the quarter pipe. Attach pieces of 3/8 plywood boards down flat on top of the 2-by-4 rib support structure and across the width of the frame. Use the drill and screws to secure the boards to the support structure. As you go up the structure the boards will curve to make the ramp. All of the boards need to be touching edges so there are no gaps.

    • 8

Take a metal pipe that is at least an inch thick and the same width as the quarter pipe and attach it where the box platform and ramp boards meet at the top. Use nails to secure the pipe in place. Use sandpaper to sand the entire surface area of the ramp until it is smooth.
