Substitutes for Skateboards

From the leisure rider to the avid trickster, skateboarding is a dynamic sport that will get your adrenaline pumping and is matched by just a few substitutes. The few items that can remain on par with the skateboard's gravity defying abilities vary from the classic to the unconventional. Some options include a scooter, bicycle, roller blades and a wave board.
  1. Scooter

    • A scooter is an all-metal vehicle that allows the rider to travel distances with ease and expertise. Like the skateboard the scooter is also capable of a multitude of tricks from ramp stunts to jump tricks off stairs and other apparatus. The scooter can be ridden by simply resting one foot on the metal board and using the other foot to propel forward. This is all done while your hands are holding on the the handle bars to keep you steady and allow you to turn the scooter.

    Bicycle

    • The bicycle was first created in the early 19th century and has remained a staple of non-motorized travel since. Like the skateboard, the bicycle may be used for a leisurely ride through the park or extreme stunts like off-road biking and ramp style trick biking. From its conceptional to now, the bicycle still relies on a foot-powered, hand-controlled design.

    Roller Blades

    • First forged the in the early 18th century, roller blades were derived as a means to skate after the ice had melted in the rivers and streams of Europe. Roller blades allow you to ride through sidewalks from destination to destination, and are popular with thrill seekers looking to get their adrenaline pumping. You can grind rails, jump down stairs and weave through obstacles just by creating a fluid motion with your legs to propel yourself.

    Wave board

    • The wave board, a type of skateboard, surfboard and snowboard hybrid, allows users to ride a two-wheeled, two-deck board connected by a torsion bar. The fluid motions of the wave board allow the rider to easily navigate and perform custom tricks that seem to defy physics. The wave board is controlled by the independent motions of both feet working in tandem to maneuver the wave board.
