What Is a Micro Skateboard?

Skateboards come in different sizes based on the size of the rider. The four main sizes are full-size, midsize, mini and micro. Micro skateboards are the smallest of the four sizes and are typically made for the youngest skateboarders. The size specification idenotes the size of the skateboard's deck or wooden portion, where the skater stands.
  1. Deck Specifications

    • A skateboard deck with a length between 27.2 and 27.6 inches long carries the "micro" designation. The width of micro skateboards ranges anywhere from 6.5 to 6.75 inches. Remembering the length and width are important when shopping for a deck or pre-assembled skateboard because not all sellers refer to them as "micro." The decks may be classified by rider age and size or simply by measurement.

    Rider Specifications

    • As the smallest-sized skateboards, micro decks are typically for learning skaters aged from three to 10, but age specifications are less important than the child's actual size. Ideal for riders who wear a shoe size three or less, these small boards are best suited for skaters under 3 feet 4 inches in height.

    Gear Specifications

    • If you're buying a pre-assembled board, you won't have to worry about gear. If you plan on assembling the board yourself, you must buy the right parts to fit these smaller-than-average skateboards. The width of the skateboard deck directly affects the size of trucks you'll need. Boards classified as "micro" and any other boards between 6.5 and 7- nches in width can use either 3-, 3.5-, 4- or 4.5-inch trucks. The profile height should be standard for young riders; high- and low-profiled trucks make specific tricks or advanced riding styles easier. The best all-around wheels for beginners are 54 to 60 mm wheels, with smaller ones better for tricks and larger ones better suited for longboards.

    The Other Sizes

    • If the rider is taller than 3 feet 4 inches or has a shoe size larger than three, consider one of the larger skateboard classifications. Mini boards are for those between 3 feet 5 inches and 4 feet 4 inches with size four to six shoes. Midsize boards best suit 4-feet-5-inch to 5-feet-2-inch riders who wear size seven or eight shoes. Lastly, full-size boards are for anybody taller than 5 feet 3 inches or with shoes size nine or higher.
