What Is the Size of a Skateboard Important For?

Size does matter when it comes to skateboarding. The main part of the skateboard, called the deck, is the flat surface where a skater puts his feet. Sizing varies from person to person but, generally, there is a sizing guideline to follow as your skating skills (and height) increase.
  1. Experience

    • For the novice skateboarder, you'll want to get a board that's on the wider side. Most decks are between 7 and 8 inches wide. The wider the deck, the easier it is to learn how to balance on the skateboard. Also, a wider deck is easier to control on turns and to ride around town for several hours. The narrower the deck, the more work the skateboarder has to put in to control the movement of the board. As you advance in skateboarding, you'll be able to use a more narrow deck.

    Height

    • Your height plays a role in selecting the length of your board. A sizing guideline (see References) shows you how to choose a deck length to suit your height. As you grow taller, you'll have to replace the deck because it won't be comfortable to ride. Just as a board that is too long will be difficult for a shorter person to control, keeping a board that you've outgrown will mean less control and ability to perform tricks.

    Foot Size

    • When choosing a deck size, consider whether you have big feet. If you do, you'll want to adjust the width of your deck so that you're comfortable moving your feet on and off the deck. There are no strict guidelines, just try out different widths before buying your new deck and choose the one that is most comfortable.

    Skills

    • After developing basic skateboarding skills, you can get a deck that will allow you to practice and perform whatever skills and tricks you want. The length of your board should be determined by your height. As far as width, you can choose a board that is wider (about 8 inches) if you'd like to skate transition or vert at the skate park or just use your board to get around. If you're interested in performing tricks and skating on ramps, a narrower deck, about 7 inches wide, is best.
