How to Run Onto Your Skateboard

Some of the most exciting tricks in street skateboarding are performed over stairs, off ledges and onto handrails. The key component to pulling off tricks successfully is to gain speed for an explosive start before ollying into you trick. Running onto your skateboard is a way to get instant speed in an area where you do not have the room to push off with one foot. A running start onto your skateboard will lead to an instant face plant if not pulled off correctly, so pay close attention.

      Place your skateboard on a flat surface, such as a sidewalk or walkway leading up to a staircase or ledge. Place your skateboard at least 6 to 10 feet away from the ledge or handrail that you will be ollying onto. Clear the area of any rocks or debris in the path between your skateboard and the ledge or staircase.

      Back up about 10 feet from your skateboard. Visualize yourself running full speed and jumping onto your board. Play out the maneuver in your head before you attempt it. Take notice of the height of the hand rail or ledge ahead of you to determine how fast you want to be going.

      Run toward your board and gain momentum to create speed. Jump off your back foot when you are 1 to 2 feet before your board and place both feet, at the same time, on the board. Your front foot should be placed directly above the front trucks and your back foot should be directly above the back trucks. Center your weight equally between your two feet.
