Instructions

    • 1

Study bicycle safety precautions. You can find some helpful websites online, such as BicycleSafe.com and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (see Resources).

    • 2

Find a bike that's the right size for you and gather bicycle safety accessories such as a well-fitting bicycle helmet, reflective clothing, reflectors and a bicycle light. Wear a helmet and reflective clothing while bicycling.

    • 3

Straddle the bike and make sure the seat is adjusted at the proper level. The seat is adjusted to the proper height if your feet can lie flat on the ground while your legs are straightened out.

    • 4

Push yourself forward, keeping both hands on either side of the handle bar to steer as desired. Carefully lift your feet off the ground and place them on the pedals, rotating them forward with your feet to propel you in the direction you're steering. Brake when you wish to slow down or stop.

    • 5

Obey the same traffic rules as motorists, including signaling with your hand before you make turns. Watch out for safety hazards such as rocks, leaves and pedestrians.
