Find a Zumba class near you. Zumba classes are held at local gyms, athletic clubs, YMCAs and dance studios. Attend class three to five times a week. Zumba is most beneficial in losing weight when you attend class regularly. Depending on the intensity of your workout and your body composition, a Zumba class burns 500 to 800 calories during a 60 minute class. If you cannot find a Zumba class nearby, purchase the Zumba DVDs and perform the moves at home.

Move and have fun. Don't worry about performing the steps perfectly. Moving your body is the most important aspect of Zumba. If you have difficulty with the choreography, shake your hips and try to perform similar moves. You can also go back to a more basic step, such as the salsa. Burn the most calories by working the core muscles in your abdomen through twisting and shaking.

Eat healthy foods, such as fruits and vegetables, beans, healthy carbohydrates and lean protein. Protein helps the body build muscle. Maintaining a healthy diet is important in maximizing the benefits of Zumba. A poor diet high in fat and sugar is not beneficial to losing weight no matter how much Zumba you dance.
