First, you'll need to become a certified personal trainer or at least get a fitness trainer certification. There are many fitness associations to choose from, including the American Council on Exercise (ACE), the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) and the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). You will need to study course material and take a written test. Look into liability insurance options available from the fitness association you get certified through.

Specific courses are available that offer outdoor boot camp instructor certification. However, these might not be necessary. Spend a lot of time observing or participating in other boot camps. Spend a lot of time on program design so that your workouts are challenging and versatile. A lot of equipment is not necessary, but a few weights and other items can be extremely helpful.

Once you have your certification and program design set to go, spread the word about your upcoming boot camp classes. If you are working for a gym, they probably will take care of the advertising for you. However, fliers can't hurt, and neither can letting your friends and family know and spread the word. A free sample class is often good for drumming up support.
