What Type of Machine Will Tone Your Butt?

The gluteus maximus is largest muscle in the body and it is accompanied by the gluteus minimus and gluteus medius. Because it is such a large area, many people see their butts as their top priority for toning. While you may not be able to change the basic shape of your butt --- flat as a board won't turn into full and round --- there are several exercise machines that can tone the area and reshape the muscles.
  1. Elliptical

    • The elliptical machine combines a stair-stepping motion with a running motion and offers both fat-burning cardio with strength training for your lower body. The stepping motion will tone your legs, hips and butt. For additional toning action, increase the incline on your machine.

    Hip Abductor

    • A hip abductor machine works deep into the outer thigh muscles, and tones and tightens the sides of the butt. You sit with your outer thighs against padded plates. The padded plates add resistance as you press your thighs outward. Most abductor machines offer an adductor option, in which you flip the plates so that the pads face outward and are against your inner thighs. You bring your thighs together in this exercise. This option works your inner thighs.

    Leg Press

    • The leg press engages the quadriceps, hamstrings and gluteal muscles. You sit at an angle with your feet against a metal plate and your thighs close to your body. You press the plate away from your body by extending your legs forward.

    Butt Blaster

    • The "Butt Blaster" is an exercise machine that puts you in a position similar to "donkey kicks." When doing the exercise, you get down on all fours and kick one leg back and upward, with your heel going towards the ceiling. Your thigh is parallel to the floor. This exercise is great for targeting and toning the area where the butt meets the back of the thigh.
