1
Remove the bench from your Soloflex. The bench attaches to the main frame via a bench pin that passes through holes in the metal supports on the bench and on the frame. If you use the leg extension that can be attached to the other end of the bench, you will need to unclip it by removing the hitch pin.

2
Sand off the existing varnish with a belt sander, being careful not to remove too much of the wood itself. Sand with the grain of the wood if any is present, not against the grain.
-
3
Use a chemical paint stripper to remove the varnish if you do not have a good power sander available. You can apply the stripper by hand (wearing rubber gloves) or with a paint brush. Sand any remaining varnish, using 120 grit sandpaper, after the stripper has done its job. Remove any remaining paint stripper according to its instructions. Allow the bench to dry.

4
Sand the wood smooth with 220 grit sandpaper.
-
5
Stain the bench with your choice of stains by brush or hand as appropriate, keeping in mind the type of wood if known and the desired color. Allow to dry.

6
Apply the top coat with a paintbrush; for a piece of exercise equipment, you likely want to use polyurethane, which is both water-resistant and provides some protection for the wood. Polyurethane should be applied in several coats, sanding in between each thin layer with 320 grit sandpaper. Allow to dry after applying the final coat.
