How to Clean Up Barbell Weights

The disc shaped weights used on barbells are commonly referred to as plates. Some plates can become rusted if they are left outdoors or allowed to remain wet for long periods of time because they are made of metal. Old weights can be cleaned up with a little elbow grease and will last for years if properly maintained. When you are sharing weights with other people, it is also important to disinfect the weights before and after each use to protect yourself and those around you from communicable diseases.

Instructions

    • 1

Wet a steel wool soap pad under running water. Steel wool soap pads are available in most grocery stores and two popular brands are Brillo and S.O.S. pads.

    • 2

Scrub the barbell weights with the steel wool pad. Try to remove as much rust as possible, especially flaking pieces of rust, but keep in mind that you may not be able to remove all of the discolored areas.

    • 3

Rinse the weights with warm water to remove any remaining soap.

    • 4

Dry the weights with a clean towel.

    • 5

Spray the weights with an alcohol based cleaner. Wipe the weight with a clean towel to spread the cleaner over the entire surface of the weight. This will kill any germs on the weight.

Store the weights on a weight rack to keep them up off the floor and prevent them from getting dirty.
