Pilates Certification Programs in Los Angeles

There are several Pilates certification programs available in the Los Angeles area. Many offer both Mat Pilates certification and the more advanced Comprehensive Pilates certification. Programs for the former generally last a weekend, and cost around $200; the latter program, which includes Mat Pilates, lasts about a year and can cost up to $5,000. Pilates certification has yet to be standardized, so research programs carefully before making a decision.

  1. Ocean Pilates

    • This studio, located in Santa Monica, offers an eight-month long program that requires students to complete 470 hours of observation, lectures, workout practice, teaching and studio management, followed by a final exam. It closely follows Joseph Pilates' original idea of teaching Pilates at five different levels, and includes five 10-hour lectures based on each level. The studio allows students to come in weekdays as well as Saturdays to complete hours. The certification program costs $4,500, and can be paid in up to five installments. Insurance and study materials must be purchased separately.

    The Pilates Studio of Los Angeles

    • This studio integrates traditional Pilates exercise with orthopedic rehabilitation. It offers comprehensive Pilates certifications for $3,500. You must also pay another $195 to take the final exam, which includes both a written and practical portion. The program includes five lectures/workshops and an apprenticeship, in which students complete a total of 450 observation and teaching hours. Proficient students may receive wage compensation during the apprentice phase. The studio also offers a separate Mat Pilates certification.

    Pilates Institute of Southern California

    • Located in Manhattan Beach, this studio charges $4,800 for its year-long certification program. It provides 800 hours of lecture, observation, practice teaching, private lessons, personal workouts, independent study and optional workshop attendance. In addition to learning the history, methodology and technique used for every exercise on all equipment, students will learn injury prevention and all business aspects related to Pilates instruction. The apprentice portion includes completing hours of observation, teaching, personal workouts and private lessons. Payment plans and Mat certifications are available.
