Types of Spin Bike Chains
-
Definition: Spin Bike
-
A spin bike is a stationary exercise bike with a weighted flywheel in front. The weighted flywheel helps to more accurately mimic the resistance of an actual bike being ridden outdoors. Spin bikes tend to be sturdier than the average stationary exercise bike, built so that the rider can come out of the saddle and grind the pedals.
Chains and Belts
-
Spin bikes can be divided into two general categories: those with chains and those with belts. As of December 2009, spinner bikes using belts are the LeMond Rev Master and the Schwinn Airdyne Evolution.
Information Source
-
Unfortunately, Schwinn does not list information about its spinner bikes on its product website. Star Trac does provide information on its brands of spinning bikes, but does not give any information regarding whether certain types use chains or belts. Neither company provides information on the chains it uses. The only source of detailed information regarding spinner bike chains is Krislynn Cycle & Fitness.
Confirmed Spin Bikes with Chains
-
As of December 2009, the following spin bikes are known to use chains: Schwinn IC Pro, Schwinn Johnny G Pro, Schwinn Airdyne, Schwinn Elite, Schwinn Pro, Star Trac Johnny G Spinner and Star Trac V.
Special Notes
-
The Schwinn IC Pro and Johnny G Pro use the same size and type of chain. The Schwinn Airdyne uses two chains: one from the pedal to the idler, the other from the idler to the wheel. The Schwinn Pro uses what is referred to as a “chain turbo.”
Bike Chain Sizes
-
Due to differing construction, chains used on one brand of spin bike may not fit other brands, even those manufactured by the same company.
