How to Do Side Leaps

The side leap is an advanced move in many different styles of dance, demonstrating strength, grace and flexibility. Side leaps are common in fast-paced dance routines, accentuating dramatic points in the music. According to Minda Goodman Kraines and Esther Pryor, authors of "Jump into Jazz," a traditional side leap is difficult to master, and only experienced dancers should attempt it. With time and practice, you can learn to perform a side leap to enhance your dancing repertoire.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin the movement with a large sashay. A sashay looks similar to a galloping motion. Step forward with your right leg, keeping your toes pointed, and leap into the air. While in air, bring both feet together and end the sashay stepping forward with your right leg once more. According to Eric N. Franklin, author of "Conditioning for Dance," this is the correct way to begin a side leap in most forms of dance.

    • 2

Step forward with your left leg, bending at the knee to give you enough power to propel your body into the air.

    • 3

Rotate your hips clockwise as you leap into the air. While you are in the air, bring your legs out to the sides in a split. Your legs should be straight out, toes pointed horizontally.

    • 4

Land on your left leg first, crossing your right leg behind the left leg for balance. Bend at the knees as you land to cushion your body against the heavy impact.
