How to Do a Right Side Hurdler

The side hurdler is a cheerleading jump where the right or left leg is straight out to the side as the lead leg and the opposite leg is bent. You might be better on one side than the other, but should practice with both legs as the lead because routines may call for different legs to lead. A variety of arm motions can be done with the jump, but the T motion is the most popular. The T is when both arms are straight out to the side and hands are in fists.

Instructions

    • 1

Go up on toes to prep for the jump. Do not double or triple bounce before jumping.

    • 2

Bend down and lift off the ground bringing the right leg straight out to the side and bending the left leg. The knee should be positioned forward, toward the crowd and the right leg, lead leg, should be straight out to the side with the knee facing towards the ceiling.

    • 3

Keep chest and head up and back straight the entire time, this helps to keep the torso upright. Don't drop arms down at the sides, instead hit the arm position hard.

    • 4

Legs need to be brought up to the arms by rolling the hips under. Remember to always point toes.

    • 5

Whip legs up fast and then snap them back down hard, so that landing is not sloppy, but sharp.

    • 6

Land with feet together and arms at the sides. Landing should be silent, landing on toes, then the balls of feet to the heel.
