How to Make Your Own Speed Drill

Speed is an important attribute for many different sports. For example, baseball players need speed to quickly run the bases while soccer players use speed to move up and down the pitch. Speed drills will help players increase the ability to move quickly while also improving their agility. Creating your own speed drills will offer these benefits while also helping you develop in other ways.

Instructions

    • 1

Create an obstacle course using the field cones. For example, place the cones different distances apart to create sprinting lanes for the athletes. Create longer distance routes to challenge the athletes as they progress in their speed training.

    • 2

Equip runners with a weighted vest before making them run the speed drill course. Running with the weighted vest will force their bodies to become acclimated to moving with more weight and help them run faster once they remove the additional resistance.

    • 3

Use the resistance parachute to increase the difficulty of your new speed drill. For a more challenging drill, create a course that forces the athletes to complete the run while moving up hill. The added resistance between the parachute and running up hill will help increase the runner's speed during competition.

Continue to mix and match the different type of courses with training equipment to impact the runner in different ways. Monitor the players' improvement through time trails to watch their development over an extended period of training.
