How to Punch Really Fast

A punch's power comes from the amount of force you can exert and the speed at which you can exert it. The faster you can punch, the more power you can put into it, and the more damage you can deal during a boxing match. You can't learn how to punch really fast overnight, but you can increase your muscle mass, train your reflexes and nervous system and develop the other traits you need for fast punching by committing to a training schedule.

Instructions

Punch moving targets, such as a speedbag, every day. A huge component of throwing fast punches is in your brain's ability to quickly recognize a target and send the signal to your fists to punch. So, by working on speedbags on a regular (daily) basis, you will make this skill second nature and dramatically increase the rate at which you can punch.

Hit a heavy bag with a predetermined series of punches as fast as you possibly can for a short period of time. The key to this exercise is to punch at full effort --- if you start coasting through your punching period, you are not going to increase your punching speed. Rest for 30 seconds, then repeat this exercise a few more times.

Relax your fist as you punch. Keep your fists loose until they actually hit their target, loosen your shoulders, and don't tighten anything until you make contact. This will dramatically speed up your punch by giving you less work to do during the majority of your fist's swing.

Breathe quickly. It is tempting, and more comfortable, to take in a large gulp of oxygen slowly. However, your body will subconsciously time your punching to match your breathing, so if you breathe in short bursts it will be easier to punch in short bursts.

Focus on these exercises every day, and over time your punching speed will increase.
