How to Create a Stronger Punch

The foundations of the martial arts are about efficiently utilizing the body's strength and leverage rather than raw strength. Although pure strength is an asset, striking-based martial arts such as Shotokan karate and Tiger-style Shaolin kung fu focus more on technique. One of the first techniques you learn is how to execute a proper punch. Proper orientation of the body is vital, as is coordination of movement.

Instructions

Stand facing the punching bag, and drop into a rooted stance with your knees slightly bent. Turn your upper body in the direction of your punching hand. If you intend to punch with your right hand, turn your torso to the right 45 degrees.

    • 2

Chamber your punching fist at your hip with the fingers pointed upward. Keep your muscles relaxed.

    • 3

Twist your hips and waist as you extend your punching arm.

    • 4

Twist your wrist until your fingers end up pointing downward. Your wrist should be perfectly aligned to prevent injury when you strike. Tighten your muscles just before contact, but keep them relaxed throughout the punch. Tense muscles lessen the power given to your strike.

Stop twisting when your punching side is turned 45 degrees facing the bag. You should have made a 90-degree rotation. Picture your fist going through the bag; this helps to override your natural tendency to pull your strike to prevent injury.

Perfom a kiai as you make contact. A kiai can be a simple exhalation or a short yell. The air needs to come from your diaphragm; shouting is a method of relaxing your abdominal muscles and focusing your mind on the punch.
