How to Project Force in a Punch

Martial arts has been an integral part of many athletes' lives. For those who may not be experts in martial arts techniques, it is important to understand the basics of offensive, weaponless fighting. The basic punch can be powerless if the right technique is not used. By positioning the body in a certain way and with plenty of practice, martial arts beginners can learn to improve their punches by projecting force.

Stand in your fighting postion, with your punching arm close to your side (also known as "in chamber") and your blocking arm in front of your body at an angle, with your fist in front of your face and your elbow slightly in front and to the side of your body.

    • 2

Position your legs shoulder width apart so that the leg on the side of your punching arm is further back than the leg on the side of your blocking arm. For example, if you punch with your right arm, it should be close to your right side and your left arm should be out in front of your body; your right leg should be further back with your left foot forward.

Deliver the punch with your punching arm, stepping forward with the foot on your blocking side and twisting your back foot towards your body. Twist at the waist as you swing. Twisting your body will project force through your punch.

    • 4

Twist your arm and your fist toward your body as you punch at your target. Try to punch through your target rather then punching at it. To do this, thrust your fist without stopping when it makes contact with your target. If you stop your punch when you reach the target, you decreases the force of your punch. Pushing it through projects more force.

Breathe out through your mouth as you throw your punch. This will help you inject more force into your punch. Practice punching while standing correctly, stepping into the punch, twisting your body, arm and hand, breathing correctly and punching through your target.
