About Aerobic Step Training
-
Expertise
-
Aerobic step training is usually taught by a certified professional who has obtained certification in a basic fitness course and has further specialized in group exercise set to music.
Moves
-
Most aerobic step classes are built around a series of moves that are performed on or around a step platform. Some common moves include the V-step, over the top, the hamstring curl, lunges, repeater knee, L-step, and the basic step.
Platform
-
The platform (also called a step or a bench) is not necessary and a step routine can be performed on the ground. The step is anywhere from 4 inches to 10 inches high, depending on the skill of the individual. Most people prefer to work on an 8 inch high step.
Safety
-
The most likely area to be injured in an aerobic step class is the knee. Care must be taken in order to ensure that the knee does not flex past the foot when performing step aerobics.
Achilles Tendon
-
When stepping, the stepper should place the full foot on the platform. Otherwise, there is a risk of causing injury to the Achilles tendon.
Calories Burned
-
In a 1 hour aerobic step training class, the average participant burns between 400 and 600 calories. The height of the step and the weight of the participant affect this amount.
Name
-
Many aerobic step training classes are called Reebok step after the original creator of the plastic step platform.
