How to Walk After Hip Graft Surgery

Walking after a hip graft surgery can be challenging. You should always be cautious to avoid any injuries and complications. However, it is advisable to start some gentle activities immediately because this will help to offset the effects of the anesthetic, help you heal, and keep blood clots from forming in your leg veins. Remember to follow all your doctor's prescribed exercises for full rehabilitation and do not walk without your doctor's consent.

      Replace old or worn out shoes when walking. Walk with protective shoes to ensure that you are stable and balanced. This will help prevent any accidents such as tripping and also injuries such as ankle sprains and muscle aches.

      Apply heat before walking to assist your hips and leg muscles with range of motion. Use a heating pad or hot, damp towel and apply it for 15 to 20 minutes.

      Start walking slowly on a flat, stable surface. Avoid surfaces that are too soft or too hard such as loose ground, asphalts or pavements. You will be more prone to injuries on these surfaces. Use a walker or a trekking pole to aid your balance. Use them as an extra pair of legs; they help to stabilize you while also reducing fatigue.       Walk with a moderate pace or depending on your own strength and tolerance level. Stop if the pain becomes intolerable.

      Gradually increase your distance and speed. Do not rush and overexert your body.

      Cool down and do some mild stretching to relax your hip and leg muscles after each walk. Elevate your legs slightly if necessary and apply an ice pack for 15 to 20 minutes to relax and soothe your muscles.
