How to Pick Music for Power Walking

Music is great for helping you to reach your power walking goals, but only if you pick the right songs. The music you choose should provide a pleasant distraction, keep you energized and encourage you to push through to the end of your walk.

Instructions

    • 1

Evaluate the types of music you like. If you have a music library on your computer or a CD collection, sort through your music to jog your memory about old favorites that you may have forgotten.

    • 2

Create several playlists for power walking. Having a few playlists to choose from can keep you from getting bored with your music selection and tired of your workout. Select only your favorite songs.

    • 3

Choose music that makes you excited and happy, whether this is thumping European-techno music or Bach's Fantasia in D minor. Usually, music with a quick tempo is best for keeping your power walking pace at its peak. If you pick sad or slow music, you might find that your pace mimics this when you aren't paying attention. You may get a less intense workout.

    • 4

Plan your playlist to relate to your power walking route. Determine where will you be at various intervals in your walk. If you know you get tired around the 30-minute mark, insert an energizing song at that slot in your playlist.

Choose serene music, perhaps something classical, for your cool down.
