How to Hike the Grand Canyon

Hiking the Grand Canyon can be a beautiful and rewarding experience. The Canyon, located along the Colorado River in Arizona, winds its way along 277 miles and reaches depths of 4 to 18 miles. The Canyon and the surrounding area are operated by the National Park Service and welcomes visitors year round, weather permitting.

Instructions

    • 1

Plan a trip to the South or North Rim of the Grand Canyon. The park service recommends using one of the five "corridor" trails for your first hike through the Grand Canyon. These trails are well maintained and some offer shady rest stops, restrooms and water fountains. A permit is not needed to hike the "corridor" trails.

    • 2

Get in shape. Most hikers overestimate their physical condition when they attempt to hike the Grand Canyon. If you do not already follow a fitness routine, start preparing several months in advance.

    • 3

Check the weather forecast. Check the NOAA weather conditions for the day before you set out on your hike. You don't want to get caught in the Canyon during a storm.

    • 4

Plan your pack carefully. Make sure to carry enough water and food for the hike. The average hiker takes four to five hours to get to the bottom of the Canyon and about twice that time to climb back up to the rim.

    • 5

Dress appropriately. The temperature in the Canyon can vary dramatically as you change elevation. It's wise to dress in layers. Make sure to bring a hat to wear during the heat of the day.

    • 6

Make arrangements to stay at the Phantom Ranch. The Phantom Ranch, located at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, offers cabins and dormitory-style accommodations. Space is limited and fills up early. Reservations may be made up to 23 months in advance.

Consider a mule ride instead of hiking. The Grand Canyon park officials discourage hikers from completing a rim to river to rim hike all in the same day, due to the dangers of heat exhaustion. Mule rides are offered year round from both the North and South Rims, and may be booked 13 months in advance.
