How to Hike in a Canyon for a Workout

Although hiking is considered a recreational activity, it can raise your level of fitness. Treat hiking like a sport and you're bound to notice a difference in your stamina and muscular endurance. Like other athletes, you'll have to train your body in between hikes in order to get the most out of each session. With proper preparation, a hike in a canyon can be as rewarding as the view from the top.

Instructions

    • 1

Tailor your training regimen to suit your canyon hiking needs. For example, if you'll be hiking at altitude, increase your stamina with cardio workouts such as jogging, cycling, and swimming. For stronger muscles, add weight training to your regimen, focusing on the legs and lower body muscle groups.

    • 2

Eat a diet rich in magnesium in the days leading up to the hike. Almonds, black beans, pumpkin seeds, and spinach are rich in magnesium, which will keep you from cramping up as you climb.

    • 3

Pack a water bottle and snacks rich in protein including nuts and yogurt. In addition to these items, you should also carry enough clothing to keep you warm.

    • 4

Lace up your hiking boots and hit the canyon trail. Start slowly and pace yourself. As a beginner, your goal should be to complete the hike, not to race to the top.

    • 5

Keep your focus sharp, maintaining both mental and physical strength throughout the hike. Unlike sprinting or swimming, the workout will take a slow, low impact toll on your body. This will allow you to exercise longer before you become fatigued.
