What to Look for in a Walking Shoe

Walking shoes have a variety of features designed to provide a range of comfort. Choosing the wrong walking shoe can cause lower back pain, achy feet and blisters. Each person has a uniquely shaped arch and foot that determines the appropriate type of shoe to purchase. Knowing what characteristics to look for in a pair of walking shoes can help you to ignore distracting advertisements and purchase the right pair of shoes.
  1. Soles

    • Feet fall into one of three arch-types--normal, high and low. A high-arched foot has a large gap between the heel and the ball of the foot, while the gap with a low-arched foot is almost nonexistent. The neutral foot falls in the center of the two extremes. High arches need extra cushioning from the soles because the arch places excessive pressure on the tendons and nerves in the calves. Low arches need a sole that provides extra support to compensate for the natural lack of stability. Neutral arches need firm midsoles.

    Lasts

    • A shoe last is the bottom of the shoe that determines the best fit for each type of arch. If you have a low arch, look for a shoe with a last that is as straight as possible from the toe to the center to the heel. A neutral arch can have a similar style last or one that has a slight curve. High arches can benefit from a strongly curved last.

    Construction

    • The front of the shoe by the toes needs to be flexible in order for walking comfort. It should give to slight pressure when bent. If it is stiff, it will cause shin pain. The heel shouldn't be too thick or bulky, as it can cause the front of your foot to work harder than your heel. This will result in shin pain as well. The heel also needs to provide ample support around the edge of the heel. Avoid shoes with too much traction, which can cause you to trip. Lastly, the top of the shoe should feature breathable material to reduce heat build-up.

    Fit

    • Shoes should be slightly wider than your foot for even weight distribution. The front of the shoes should allow you enough space for your toes to spread out while walking. Walk around the store in the shoes and make sure they feel comfortable before you purchase.
