How to Increase Steps Per Day

An important component of improving your health is to increase the steps you take. Most people walk about 3,000 to 5000 steps each day. Physicians, fitness instructors and government officials recommend the 10,000 steps per day program. The program encourages people to increase their daily steps gradually to reach 10,000, which is the equivalent of 5 miles. Walking more each day promotes good health and helps you lose or maintain your weight.

Instructions

    • 1

Wear a pedometer. Put it on when you wake up and wear it until bedtime. The pedometer tracks each step that you take. Once you know how many steps you normally take each day, you can work on increasing it.

    • 2

Get up early and go for a walk before work.

    • 3

Take a walk as a family after dinner.

    • 4

Walk to any place in walking distance rather than driving.

    • 5

Go to your coworker's desk rather than calling or sending an email.

    • 6

Use the copier, fax machine or restroom furthest away from your desk if you work in a large office.

    • 7

Change the television channel manually rather than using the remote.

    • 8

Walk around the house during commercials while watching TV.

    • 9

Take the stairs to increase your steps instead of taking the elevator.

    • 10

Park in the furthest parking spot from the door when you go to work or to any business establishment.

    • 11

Go to the mall and browse the stores.
