How to Set a Pedometer

A pedometer measures how many steps you take by noting the movement of your hips. 10,000 steps a day has been recommended to maintain an active lifestyle, which is the equivalent to about 5 miles. A pedometer is a great tool that can help motivate you to increase the number of steps you take during the day.
Since everyone has a different step length, it's necessary to set a new pedometer to your individual gait. This takes only a few minutes, and allows you to have accurate readings while you use the pedometer.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure out a distance of 40 to 50 feet. For example, use the sidewalk in front of your home, or a nearby track.

    • 2

Clip your pedometer onto your waistband, in a vertical position. This location provides the most accurate readings for most pedometers.

    • 3

Walk forward, with a normal stride, for 10 steps. Measure the distance you have covered. You can try this 3 times and average the results to get the most accurate results.

    • 4

Enter the information into your pedometer, according to the directions.

    • 5

Zero out your pedometer reading, and walk 20 to 30 steps. Check the accuracy of your calibration.

    • 6

Drive your car along a walking path. This can be around your neighborhood, even. Walk the same path, and check the accuracy of your pedometer for a longer calibration check.
