Talk to your doctor before you start a walking program. Regular fatigue can be a sign of a serious medical condition in come cases. Undergo tests to make sure your fatigue isn't related to a larger medical issue.

    • 2

Wear properly fitted shoes designed for walking. Walking shoes provide the right support on your bones and joints. The better your bones and joints are supported and the more comfortable you are, the longer you'll be able to walk.

Walk short distances at first, but aim for longer distances as you build your endurance. In the beginning, you may feel tired after a 5-minute walk. Continue your program, adding a few minutes each day, and over time, you'll develop the fitness and stamina to walk longer distances without fatigue.

Choose a diet made up primarily of lean, fresh foods such as whole grains, low-fat meats, fresh fruits and vegetables and fat-free dairy. A nutritious diet provides you with the energy you need to complete your walk and the nutrients you need to build muscle and recover after your walk.

Keep hydrated. Drink at least 2 liters of water each day, MayoClinic.com recommends. Don't just drink after exercise. Drink water all day long, including before and during your workout.

Dress in layers to prevent overheating. If you're overheating, you're more likely to feel discomfort and fatigue. Mix a light-weight T-shirt or tank top with a jacket you can easily remove. Check the weather forecast before you leave for your walk.

Walk with a buddy. The conversation and companionship may distract you from thinking about your workout or your fatigue and help you walk longer distances without realizing it.
