How to Compare Nordic Walking Poles

Nordic walking poles provide a whole-body workout, employing a wider range of muscles than regular walking, while taking pressure off the knees and providing stability on uneven terrain. A variety of poles are available, ranging in cost from $25 to $150 and up. When comparing sets of poles, consider weight, height, grips and any special features. Assess your personal level of skill and experience to determine the best compromise of price and quality.
  1. Weight

    • Most Nordic walking poles are made from carbon or aluminum. Carbon poles usually are more expensive, as they are lighter and stronger. Aluminum poles are cheaper, but can channel more vibration through your arms. Composite poles of carbon and aluminum also are available.

    Height

    • Fixed-height poles are sufficient if you will be walking only on level surfaces, but if you plan to hike or walk on uneven terrain, adjustable poles provide more leverage. Adjustable poles also are convenient if you plan to share your poles with others. You should be able to grip your poles comfortably while standing with your elbows bent and your forearms extended straight in front of you.

    Grips

    • Pole grips usually are rubber, cork or foam. Cork or rubber handles provide more durability for hiking and other strenuous use, while foam handles offer a softer touch for light street walking. Test different types of poles to find the grips most comfortable for you.
