Disadvantages of Water Aerobics
-
Access to a Pool
-
Access to a public pool is necessary for water aerobics. Ideally water aerobics take place in an indoor pool so that participants can still enjoy their exercises when weather conditions are unfavorable. Access to an indoor swimming pool is important for those interested in taking water aerobic classes. Make sure that places in your area that offer them are within a safe and reasonable driving distance or that they are easily accessible via public transportation.
Safety of Public Pools
-
Chemicals used in public pools can have adverse effect on skin. Unless you have the advantage of owning your own indoor pool then a public facility that offers water aerobic classes is probably your next best option. While public swimming facilities are generally safe there have been incidences of individuals coming away from them with skin irritations and infections due to chemicals used to treat the water. If you opt to use a public pool be sure to thoroughly shower and wash afterward.
Cost
-
Cost of water aerobics can vary. Water aerobics classes are not offered free of charge and while subsidized places such the YMCA or YWCA may offer water aerobic classes at a reasonable rate, not everyone has access to a publicly funded fitness facility and therefore may find the cost of water aerobic classes available prohibitively expensive.
Does Not Burn as Many Calories
-
Weight-bearing exercises burn more calories than water aerobics. Participants in water aerobics enjoy a form of exercise that is easier on their joints but that also works their heart and major muscle groups. However water aerobics, does not burn calories as well as weight-bearing exercises. Water aerobics will contribute to your overall fitness over time, just not as quickly and efficiently as more strenuous forms of exercise.
