How Long Does It Take to Notice a Difference With a Kettlebell?

Tracy Reifkind’s Story
-
Just four workouts led to a noticeable change for trainer Tracy Reifkind, author of “The Swing!” She was vastly overweight at 250 pounds and one day picked up her bodybuilder husband’s kettlebells on a lark. A few weeks later, in a department store dressing room trying on jeans, she noticed the beginning of shoulder definition and stronger triceps. Her body began to change “from chubby and soft to fit and firm,” and she never looked back.
What to Expect
-
Reifkind’s story is typical, and you can expect to notice similar changes in your body. “After the first couple of sessions, you can expect to see and feel a tighter midsection and butt," says Lorna Kleidman, a kettlebell world champion and creator of the KettleX training program. “After a couple of weeks you'll notice your butt is no longer sagging. Instead, it's lifted and taking on a round, firm shape.”
After the first month, you can expect to notice greater stability through your trunk and shoulders, as well as greater endurance and cardio capacity. Movements that were challenging when you first started will become easier, Kleidman predicts. Both your strength and appearance change for the better.
Mental Changes at Warp Speed
-
Leading trainer Anthony DiLuglio of Art of Strength in Providence, Rhode Island, describes an almost immediate psychic shift after trying kettlebells for the first time. “While you won’t see a difference tomorrow, you’ll feel a difference tomorrow. You sense it first,” he says. “In physical culture, your mind, your body and your spirit, your soul -- who you are, are all working together.”
And something about kicking off kettlebell training ignites immediate enthusiasm. “I get it all the time from clients,” he says. “They start this training, and the next day, they say, ‘I feel different. I can’t explain it, but it feels awesome. I feel like I want to get on a soapbox and tell the world.’ ” Much of the change comes down to a confidence that the kettlebell user can become fit and “own that strength for life,” he says.
Your Kettlebell Evolution

DiLuglio details additional physical changes as well, similar to the ones Kleidman describes. “You see that definition between abs and your obliques. Even guys see a little tiny line develop between the chest and shoulder,” he says. Women see definition between the hamstring and butt. After the second or third workout, the body starts to feel tight.
You may say to yourself, “My clothes fit differently; I can feel my abs under my fat.” Your shirts fit better, and friends might say, “You look good; what are you doing different?” From this period of rapid change, you enter a maintenance phase of staying strong, where DiLuglio notices clients are not in pain and are happier with their clothing sizes.
