1
Find a class. If you are unfamiliar with capoeira, there are exercise and performance DVDs and free online video clips show-casing the action. Also, you can observe a class or attend a live performance. Capoeira is for men and women of all ages. However, it does require a significant degree of athletic ability. Once you have decided this is for you, determine exactly what you want from the experience. Capoeira schools can provide full training in not only self-defense movement but also the cultural aspects of the martial art. This includes the playing of accompanying instruments, singing, philosophical underpinnings, and history. Student achievement through this staged mentoring process is symbolized by different color belts. Conversely, fitness centers may limit their instruction to multi-level capoeira cardio or self-defense classes to pre-recorded or live music.

Locate a class. Although capoeira is over 400 years old, it continues to grow in worldwide popularity. Master capoeiristas have established organizations such as The United Capoeira Association, the International Federation of Angola Capoeira and the Association of Capoeira to meet the demands for full training. See "Additional Resources" for websites listing schools throughout the world. There are also a number of fitness centers offering capoeira-inspired classes. You would need to contact your local fitness centers for additional information.

Select an instructor. There is not an official certification to teach capoeira. Be aware that anyone can call himself a master ("mestre") capoeirista. However, there is an established length mentorship process in which former students become instructors and eventually masters. These chains of mentorship are the relational structure for the various capoeira associations. The larger associations have websites that list affiliated capoeira schools and independent instructors. These lists may assist you in your selection of an instructor.
