How to Perform Basic Karate Kicks
Instructions
-
Performing the Front Kick
-
1
Bend either leg at the knee and raise that knee to your chest. Do not tighten your shoulders or hold your breath, as doing so will impair your balance.
-
2
Flex your foot. You don't want to strike with your toes because that will lead to injury. Concentrate on the ball of your foot as your striking weapon.
-
3
Extend your leg to perform the kick and aim the ball of your foot directly at your target. Power is added to the strike by snapping your knee.
-
4
Retract your leg as soon as your foot strikes the target. Retrieving the kick is just as important as delivering it. You don't want to leave your leg dangling in the air. If your opponent catches it, he can throw you to the ground or severely damage your knee.
Performing the Roundhouse Kick
-
5
Bend your leg at the knee and twist your hip so that your bent leg is parallel with the floor.
-
6
Point your knee directly at your target. Open your chest (don't hunch in) and keep your head up to maintain your balance.
-
7
Point your foot so that it extends down your leg in a straight line. Concentrate on the instep as your striking weapon.
-
8
Snap your knee to perform the kick, which will strike your target in a horizontal line. Power can be added by thrusting your hip into the strike.
-
9
Retract your leg as soon as your foot strikes the target.
