How to Flip Someone Over Your Shoulder

Knowing how to flip someone over your shoulder properly and safely is a valuable skill in martial arts, both for competition and for self-defense. This is a particularly good technique to use against a larger opponent. It is best to practice with a cooperative opponent, as you need an advanced technique to execute the throw properly against one who is resisting or struggling.

Instructions

    • 1

Be sure you have a firm stance and the proper position to start the throw. Feet should be about shoulder width apart, knees slightly bent, and you should have a good solid grip on your opponent's lapels.

    • 2

Step in with your right foot so that it is next to your opponent's right foot. At the same time, move your right arm underneath your opponent's left arm and then raise it up so that you are holding the back of her arm. Take her right wrist in your left hand.

    • 3

Squat down slightly to lower your center of gravity

    • 4

Turn away from your opponent, pulling her in toward you and pulling her arm over your shoulder. Bend enough that your hips push into her body under her hips so that her body and weight begin to come over the top of yours.

    • 5

Pull your opponent's arm down toward the ground while straightening your legs. Her weight will pull her up and over your shoulder and slam her down onto the mat on her back.
