How to Tie a Iaido Obi

Iaido is a form of martial arts that emphasizes sword-drawing techniques, character development and mental and physical discipline. The uniform, usually dark blue, white or black, consists of wide-legged, pleated trousers, a loose-fitting top and an obi that serves as a belt. Tying the obi is not difficult but it does require practice so that it is neither too loose nor too tight.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the obi with both hands so that it is positioned at your navel.

    • 2

Wrap the ends around your waist, cross them at center back, and then bring them back around to the front of your body.

    • 3

Cross the left side of the obi over the right side.

    • 4

Push the end that is now on the left side underneath both layers of the obi around your waist. It will come out at the top.

    • 5

Cross the obi end that is on the top over the end that is on the bottom. Secure the knot snugly but not so tight that it affects your breathing.
