How to Tie Two Pieces of Rope Together

There are many ways to join two ropes. Some methods are better for attaching certain kinds of ropes, some are better for joining ropes of different sizes and some are best for joining wet ropes. However, there is one way to join two ropes that will work for nearly any situation. This rope is the Double Fisherman's Bend or Grapevine knot. This knot is often used in climbing situations and is very sturdy. It will support a large amount of pressure and weight without slipping or coming untied.

Instructions

Place one rope end next to the end of the other rope. Make two fishhook shapes with the end of the rope. Face the top rope hook to the right and the bottom rope hook to the left. Overlap the ends so that the top rope makes an "S" shape and the bottom rope mirrors that shape. The two ropes should be aligned along the bottom section of the top "S."

Take the top rope and wrap it around the bottom rope under the bottom rope and the top rope. Leave the bottom rope in an "S" shape. Pull the end of the top rope up over the bottom and top rope. Pull the end of the top rope under the top and bottom ropes. Pull the loose end of the top rope through the two loops you just made and pull tight.

Repeat the process for the bottom rope on the top rope. You should end up with two double loops on both ropes connecting the robes. Pull the other ends of the ropes tightly to pull the two knotted sections together. As you pull the ropes, the knot will get tighter.
