How to Prepare for Your First Amateur MMA Fight

1
Find the discipline that you are good at. MMA requires a fighter to be aware of all the different arts, but most fighters are really good at a few things and not as good in others. If you are a good wrestler, then become the best wrestler you can before getting overwhelmed by all the other arts in MMA fighting. There will be plenty of time later in your career to become better in the other disciplines.

2
Find a good gym to work out at that will provide the best training for your specialty. If you are a stand up fighter, for example, find a gym that focuses more on striking but also offers other disciplines for crosstraining to become a complete mixed martial arts fighter.

3
Spend a lot of time working on your cardio. You can perfect your discipline, but if you're not able to keep the endurance in the later rounds you won't be a good fighter. The goal is to be in top shape the day of your fight. Getting into fight shape and cutting the proper weight without burning you out before the fight is the job of a good trainer. The motivation and tenacity to get into fight shape is up to the fighter.

4
Find yourself a good mentor. You can learn a lot from someone that has been there and done that. A good mentor can tell you what to expect in the fight and keep you motivated and focused while you prepare for the contest. Keep an open mind and ask a lot of questions. Your mentor got to where he is by doing the same thing.

5
Stay positive. Having the right attitude going into the fight is as important as all the training you have done. You will have some good days and some bad days as you prepare for your fight. Working out on those good days is easy, but you will need a positive attitude on those bad days. Keeping a positive attitude will also go a long way in your relationships with others at the gym. People will go out of their way more to help someone with the right attitude. As you walk into the ring or the octagon, winning is the only thing to think about. If negative thoughts start creeping into your head, negative things can happen.
