The spinning elbow technique is most often used during up-close-and-personal competition, when your opponent is in tight. This technique, along with techniques like the cross or uppercut, is designed to be used in close-quarters combat when your opponent is nearly on top of you. Never try to reach out with the spinning elbow because it loses power and can leave you vulnerable.

Spinning elbow strikes are most often thrown using your rear elbow, since the turning of your body is used to generate power. These techniques are often used as a counter to a reverse punch or kick, and are incorporated as a follow through from blocking these techniques. Step across your opponent’s body and pivot your front foot until your heel is facing your opponent. Turn your body until you can see your attacker as you spin around.

The devastating power from the spinning elbow strike is generated by the rotational force of your hips spinning toward your opponent, but one critical aspect of the technique is to keep your hips and shoulders in line with one another. Be sure your shoulders don’t rotate faster than your hips, and remain directly above them at all times. It is important to keep your elbow motion timed with the turning of your hips, since launching the technique too quickly will reduce the power generated and open you up to a counterattack.

One of the greatest benefits of the spinning elbow is its deceptive nature, because an opponent often can’t see it coming. Practice using it in combinations or as a counterattack. One effective way to use the technique is to counter a close kick with a block, punch, spinning elbow technique. The block will keep you from getting hit, while the ensuing punch will close the distance between you and your opponent. Practice with a trusted partner and, if necessary, at a slow speed until you’re sure you can use the technique. The spinning elbow will become a favorite part of your martial arts arsenal.
