How to Break a Board in Taekwondo With a Side Kick

The ability to break a board with a side kick in taekwondo is a test of force that you can't try on a person because you'll injure them. Taekwondo board-breaking requires a combination of technique and speed. Most taekwondo schools require board-breaking to advance in rank. The grade of wood (pine) and size (usually 1 by 12 inches) is up to the instructor, but they use smaller boards for younger children.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a dry board if your instructor has you buy your own wood. One that is green will give when you kick it, and that's not a good thing.

    • 2

Allow the holders to get set into position with a tight grip. They should be in front stances with their arms locked. You don't want your holders to let the board move back with the side kick.

    • 3

Focus your side kick past the board because you don't want to ease up too early. You will rely on your speed to make up for the absorption that will pass to the holders from your side kick.

    • 4

Remember to breathe and relax as you perform your side kick. Pivot your stationary foot exactly at the moment of impact with the board. Strike with just your heel making contact with the board (the striking point on your foot may vary with some instructors).

    • 5

Target the middle of the board so that the force will move outward, cracking the board apart.

    • 6

Break the board with the grain of the wood.

    • 7

Use a full chamber side kick executed with the best technique you can muster whether you are using a breaking side kick off your front leg or a side kick off your back leg.
