How to Aim in Billiards

Billiards is one of those games that appears much easier than it actually is. The one thing most amateur billiards players struggle with is their aim. Holding the stick an inch in the wrong direction or striking the cue ball 1/4 inch incorrectly will cause your aim to be off, which will result in you missing your shot. Luckily, there are steps you can take to vastly improve your aim.

Instructions

    • 1

Step away from the table and look at the secondary ball (the ball you are going to strike with your cue ball). Pick a pocket for the secondary ball.

    • 2

Place your cue stick over the secondary ball so the bottom of the stick is sitting over the center of the ball. Then draw a line with the stick to the pocket. As you draw the line, your hand should naturally reposition over the ball.

    • 3

Keep your hand over the secondary ball and draw a line with your cue stick to the cue ball. This will let you know how you should hit the secondary ball with the cue ball.

    • 4

Make a mental target on the cue ball. This target is where you will have to hit the cue ball for it to follow the line you made with your cue stick. Don't take your eye off the cue ball, or you will lose your target.

Get into your shooting position and line up the end of your cue stick to your imaginary target. Strike the ball in the middle of your target; your ball should travel in the line you created with your cue stick.
