How to Wire Gauges for Twin Evinrudes

The installation of twin outboard Evinrude engines on a larger boat calls for the need for two separate fuel gauges; one to monitor each fuel tank. Working fuel gauges are critical to have on board to be able to monitor when it is time to refuel. Installation fuel gauges involves mounting the gauge, wiring the gauges and then connecting the fuel sending units from both fuel tanks to each gauge. The process should take about one hour.

Things You'll Need

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Drill
  • Drill bit sized for the gauge's wires

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the negative battery cables from both Evinrude batteries with an adjustable wrench.

    • 2

Set the gauges on the dash panel where they will be installed. If replacing the gauges, use the old mounting holes. If installing new gauges, hold the gauges in place and drill two holes through the mounting brackets on the dash panel.

    • 3

Slip the wiring through the drilled holes and then fasten the gauges into place by inserting retaining screws (mounting hardware will come with the gauge) and tightening them down with a Phillips screwdriver.

    • 4

Run the red power wire from the back of the first gauge and install it into the power bus slot that to which the main battery is connected. Run the power wire from the second gauge and connect it to the power bus slot to which the secondary engine battery is connected.

    • 5

Connect the ground wires from the two gauges to the ground bus slots.

    • 6

Turn on the soldering iron and solder the fuel sending unit lead from the first tank to the first gauge. Solder the fuel sending unit wire from the second fuel tank to the second fuel gauge.

    • 7

Replace the negative battery cables on the Evinrude engines with the adjustable wrench.
