How to Remove a Chain From a Schwinn Krate
The Schwinn Krate, an offshoot of the Schwinn Sting-Ray, emerged in 1968 as one of the coolest street bicycles on the market. The Krate came equipped with front and rear shock suspension and hand caliper brakes. The Krate also had five speeds, with a dragster-type shifter mounted on the top tube of the frame. Krate models included the Orange Peeler, Apple Krate, Lemon Krate and the Grey Ghost. Since the Krate had gears, its chain was mounted with a derailleur. Removal of the chain is performed with a chain removal tool.

Grasp a segment of chain in your hand and place the chain tool underneath it.

Line up the tool pin with the chain rivet.

Twist the handle on the chain tool to the right to screw the tool down, pushing the chain rivet out of the back plate of the chain. Do not force the rivet all the way out. The chain will separate on its own.
