How to Start a 1999 90 HP Outboard Motor

Starting a 1999 90-horsepower Yamaha motor is a straightforward process -- most of the time. When the normal starting process fails, though, there's an emergency starting method that may take a few extra steps and a little more effort than turning a key. Knowing both of these ways to start your motor can help keep you from being stranded on the water as you wait for an expensive tow to come from the marina.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Starting with a Key

    • 1

Push the ignition key into the key switch.

    • 2

Turn the key to the "Start" position on the key switch.

    • 3

Release the key when the engine starts, or when 15 seconds passes.

    • 4

Crank the starter in 15-second bursts, with 30 seconds of "rest" between each attempt. After three tries, wait 60 seconds before attempting to start the engine again.

    Emergency Starting

    • 5

Remove the top cover from the motor.

    • 6

Remove the flywheel cover, using a 3/8-inch open-end wrench.

    • 7

Fit the knot in the end of the emergency starting rope into the notch in the flywheel. Wrap the rope clockwise around the flywheel.

    • 8

Sit in front of the motor. Press the manual priming button, located adjacent to the carburetor, until it resists. If your outboard is equipped with an electric priming assembly, turn the key switch to the "On" position. Turn the throttle grip to the "Start" position. Pull the emergency starting rope. Repeat until the motor starts.
