How to Start a 1987 90 Mariner Boat Motor
All Mariner motors since 1993 have been equipped with electronic starting. In the case of the 90-horsepower Mariner, the ignition and starting system are controlled through the engine's propulsion control module -- the PCM 038 system in the Mariner literature. Once you know the ins and outs of starting your Mariner 90 using this system, your boating adventures will take on a new, more relaxed character and you'll find starting your motor is no more difficult that starting your car.

1
Ensure your fuel tank has fresh fuel in it. Even when treated with fuel stabilizer, fuel that sets unused for about 30 days will begin to break down. It may not start your outboard and may even be harmful to it.
-
2
Insert the motor ignition key in the motor's key switch.
-
3
Turn the key 90 degrees to the right -- clockwise -- to engage the PCM 038 system and crank the motor.
-
4
Release the key as soon as the motor starts or after 10 seconds, whichever occurs first. If the motor does not start on the first try, wait 30 seconds and try again. After the third attempt, check your fuel level and wait 60 seconds before trying again.
