1
Measure the size of the engine compartment, both horizontally and vertically, using a tape measure. Measure the engine itself in the same manner. Compare the sizes.
-
2
Measure the distance between the V8's motor mounts, both front-to-back and side-to-side. Measure the distance between the boat's existing motor mounts. Compare the existing placement to the placement of mounts on the engine.
-
3
Weld new motor mounts to the boat's ribs in the engine compartment. Use the dimensions gained from measuring the motor mounts on the engine.
-
4
Confirm the bolt circle on the gear box is the same as that of the motor. Confirm the existing gear box is also able to withstand the added horsepower. Remove the existing gear box if it is not suitable for the motor, and replace it with one that is.
-
5
Remove the deck hatch from the boat. Lower the motor into the engine compartment with a crane. Move the motor so it fits onto the motor mounts. Insert bolts of proper size into the motor mount. Thread the nuts onto the bolts. Tighten them to the torque specified by the engine's manufacturer, using a torque wrench.
-
6
Connect the wiring harness and hoses to the motor, according to the instruction manual for the engine. Add any necessary circuits at the boat's circuit breaker box. Replace the engine compartment hatch. Thread the hatch bolts into place and tighten them to 55 foot-pounds with a torque wrench.
