How to Use Parachute Flares
Title 46 of the Code of Federal Regulations requires that most boats have visual distress signals on board. The amount and type are determined by the length of the boat and state regulations. One type of distress signal that qualifies is a parachute flare. These flares do not require a gun for firing. Handheld in operation, they send a stream of color and smoke up into the air. They are meant for use when rescue teams are in sight.
