How to Put an Outboard on a Hobie Pro Angler

The Hobie Pro Angler is equipped, like all of Hobie's fishing canoes and kayaks, with a pedal-powered set of flippers as propulsion. There is no place to attach a gasoline-powered outboard to the stern of the boat. The required fuel tank would take up too much of the boat's scant interior space. When, however, you get tired of pedaling, an electric trolling motor -- an electric outboard -- will give your legs a much-needed break.

Things You'll Need

  • Electric trolling motor
  • Marine battery box
  • 12-volt marine battery
  • 3/8-inch combination wrench
  • 5/16-inch combination wrench
  • 4-by-4-by-1/4-inch piece of marine plywood

Instructions

    • 1

Lower the battery box into the interior of the boat, directly behind the single seat. Lower the marine battery into the battery box.

    • 2

Push the red and black power cables of an electric trolling motor through the cable-access holes in the battery box. Connect the red cable to the positive battery post -- there's a "+" sign next to it -- tightening the battery nut with a 3/8-inch combination wrench.

    • 3

Install the black, negative cable of the trolling motor to the battery's negative post -- the only battery post remaining. Thread the nut onto the battery post and tighten it with a 5/16-inch combination wrench.

    • 4

Lower the G-clamp on a trolling motor onto one of the mounting boards on the sides of the forward part of the boat's cockpit. Fit a 1/4-inch-thick piece of marine plywood 4-by-4 inches under the swivel shoe of the clamp.

    • 5

Tighten the T-handle on the top of the clamp's thread until the swivel shoe makes contact with the piece of wood. Tighten the clamp securely, by hand.
