How to Put a Foot Back on an Evinrude Boat Motor
Without its foot, your Evinrude outboard is going nowhere. The foot, sometimes called the lower unit or gear case, contains the propulsion system that transmits the power developed by the motor's powerhead -- the engine that drives the outboard. When you put the foot onto the Evinrude, do so with caution. The drive system, including the driveshaft and the gear shifting assembly -- including the shift shaft that changes the boat's direction -- are part of the lower unit. When you install the foot, you must take care not to damage either one.

1
Raise the motor by pressing the "Trim/Tilt" switch on or near the boat's throttle. Block the motor into place with the mechanical latch in the trim system.
-
2
Lift the foot and move the driveshaft and shift shaft into the motor's exhaust tunnel without touching either shaft to the side of the tunnel. Move the foot upward until the mating surface at the top of the foot makes contact with the mating surface of the exhaust tunnel.
-
3
Push the foot upward until the studs on the top of the foot slide through the bores -- the bolt holes -- on the exhaust tunnel.
-
4
Thread the 3/4-inch nuts onto the bolts, to hold the foot in place. Tighten the nuts to 83 foot-pounds with a torque wrench.
