Nissan Outboard Water Pump Instructions

Outboard motors are a way to get out and enjoy nature on the open water. Nissan is known for making cars, trucks and SUV's. However, the manufacturer also makes a wide range of outboard motors in different sizes and engine horsepowers. The water pump on the Nissan outboard is located in the lower unit and is used to circulate water through the engine to keep it from overheating. Changing the water pump at least once a year is part of routine maintenance. It is best to have an assistant to help remove the outboard's lower unit because it is extremely heavy.

Instructions

    • 1

Loosen the bolts holding the lower unit, or gear case, to the top half of the motor. Use a socket set to remove these bolts. Have an assistant hold the lower unit as the bolts are removed.

    • 2

Remove the seating bolts holding the water pump cover in place with the socket set.

    • 3

Slide the pump housing completely off the gear shaft. Use a plastic putty knife to remove any pieces of old gasket on the outside of the pump housing gasket seals. Also wipe down the drive shaft with a clean cloth.

    • 4

Place a dab of marine grease on the new water pump housing, from the water pump kit. Place the new impeller, new gasket plate and new gasket inside the housing in that order. Also attach the rubber O-ring from the kit to the new housing and apply a small amount of marine grease to it too.

    • 5

Slide the new water pump assembly back over the drive shaft and bolt it down with the socket set.

    • 6

Lift the Nissan's lower unit with the help of the assistant and then replace the bolts that hold it to the upper half of the motor. Tighten the retaining bolts down with the socket set.
